ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Years ago, I made an eight day crossing of the gulf of Alaska in a fishing boat on the way to the Bering Sea. The initial effect upon walking out on deck was a sense of claustrophobia and terror, faced with only the endless sea surrounding me.  I had no choice but to submit and let the movement, rhythm, and vastness take me. As I did, I realized I was witnessing both the act and product of a pure creativity in this continual rising and falling perpetuity of forms. Now, if I’m still, and patient, and look closely, I can have this experience anywhere looking into the details around me: the abstraction of light, a color or texture, whether the detail from an actual painting, or some piece of nature itself; perhaps simply an adumbral patch of leaves casting violet and dappled light on the ground, becoming something other than simply the effect of a woman in a gray dress holding a parasol against the sun.

BIOGRAPHY

Multi-disciplinary artist, Joseph Bochetto Walsh, was born in New Jersey and grew up in Northern California, before moving to Tucson Arizona and attending the University of Arizona.  After graduating with a degree in English Literature, he lived in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles where he now resides.

He began painting professionally in the early 90s while living in Barcelona where he had his first studio and was inspired by his fellow artists and the freedom of forms the city presented in its architecture and color. His influences range from the art of Minoan Crete and the Quattrocento artists of Florence and Sienna, to Miro, Munch, Picasso and aboriginal Australian art.

In addition to fine art, Mr. Walsh has worked as a children’s muralist, decorative painter, deckhand, filmmaker and actor. In New York he founded RPM, a film production company where he wrote, produced and directed feature-length and award-winning short films. Mr. Walsh’s deep immersion in film, art and literature, and his close observation of, and connection to nature, and the human form, brings a unique depth and variety to his work, which hangs in private collections across the country, and has been featured in print, television and motion pictures
